Introduction

In an ongoing effort to promote mental health awareness and support, West Virginia University (WVU) has recently offered Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to its community. This initiative, hosted by WELLWVU and the West Virginia Collegiate Initiative to Advance Health, aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to identify and interact with individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

The Importance of Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based, early-intervention course designed to teach participants about mental health and substance use challenges. The training includes a five-step action plan to help identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of various mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

Key Components of MHFA

  • Identify: Participants learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues.
  • Understand: The training provides insight into the various mental health conditions and their impacts.
  • Respond: Individuals are taught how to respond appropriately, offering support and guidance when necessary.
  • Encourage: The training emphasizes encouraging individuals to seek professional help.
  • Seek Help: Finally, participants learn how to help the person in distress seek professional assistance.

WVU’s Commitment to Mental Health

WVU has long been committed to promoting mental health and well-being among its students, faculty, and staff. The university’s Division of Student Life sponsors various mental health trainings, including MHFA. This commitment is reflected in the array of resources available to the community, from self-paced mental well-being modules provided by Vector Solutions to in-depth training sessions conducted by certified instructors.

The WVU community can participate in various training sessions tailored to their needs. Here are some of the upcoming sessions:

    • Tuesday, October 22nd: This session is scheduled from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
    • Friday, November 8th: This session is scheduled from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

In addition to the general MHFA training, WVU also offers Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) specifically designed for school staff across West Virginia. This initiative is supported by a five-year SAMHSA grant and aims to address the mental health needs of children and school communities.

Conclusion

Mental Health First Aid training is a crucial step toward creating a more supportive and understanding community. By providing these resources, WVU demonstrates its commitment to the well-being of its members.
